What people say about The Square (Mayfair)
-
The beauty is in the ever changing and always elegant menu
-
The seasonal ingredients were offset by some glorious December sun
-
With many Michelin starred restaurants it is not surprising to find yourself in a formal setting
-
If there is a criticism of The Square it must be the slightly snooty atmosphere which is characterised by the self conscious and overly serious staff
-
It is important that you are enjoying being very
-
The snootyness of the atmosphere however is entirely juxtaposed with the enticing
-
The crab lasagne starter was exceptional and the fish was a delight
-
My company thoroughly enjoyed their pork loin and it was all topped off by a recommended St Emilion '98 which was a tipple or remarkable quality
-
As a restaurant the room is airy and pleasant
-
Be merry because it is not often that food and wine of this quality will be in front of you
-
So the larger portions for the mains were a bit of a struggle
-
The other plus for going the tasting menu route is if one course is not so great then it's not such a big deal
-
I had the Roast Saddle of Lincolnshire Hare with a Tarte Fine of Celeriac and Pear which was amazing and one of my companions had the Fillet of Aged Ayrshire Beef with Autumn Truffle
-
My other companion choose the Caramelised Pork Belly with Glazed Trotter
-
Langoustine Claws and Lentils and was very disappointed
-
As the Pork Belly was very fatty
-
The pre dessert was a rather nice doughnut and rhubarb/raspberry concoction
-
Then for dessert I had a very boozy Rum and Raisin Souffle with Gingerbread Ice Cream stunning
-
This was served with a nicely balanced selection of petits fours that consisted of some chocolate/nutty/Carmel truffles and a range of lollipop style sweets
-
The Square is somewhere I would highly recommend as a special treat
-
The best places are often shut at the beginning of the week
-
To start we chose roast Orkney scallops with crushed butternut squash
-
The lasagne of Dorset crab with a cappuccino of shellfish and champagne foam
-
Scorched Roscoff onion with a persillade of Somerset snails and a savoury brioche roulade
-
All I say here is that it was classically brilliant
-
Even the portions are generous &ndash
-
Rib of beef (for two) with a croustillant of oxtails
-
Breast of grouse with turnip and celeriac
-
The crispy potato roulade encasing confit leg meat was the best element on the plate
-
We shared a tooth decaying milk chocolate bar with salted peanuts
-
Suited feel of The Square is its let down
-
The four other occupied tables were counting beans
-
Almost as important is the service and atmosphere
-
The Square is certainly a good restaurant
-
The Square is noted for its extensive and (by central London standards) modestly priced wine list
-
Beetroot salad was prettily presented
-
Served with charred celeriac and semi dried pear with goat&rsquo
-
I felt on surer ground with the well established dish here of sauté
-
Ed Scottish langoustine tails with Parmesan gnocchi and an emulsion of potato and truffle
-
Rabbit on a bed of pasta with white truffles was very enjoyable
-
Loin of fallow deer was served on a tarte fine of pear and celeriac
-
The pastry having been rendered a little soggier than it doubtless started by its contact with the meat (17/20)
-
Brillat Savarin cheesecake with passion fruit
-
Lime and coconut is another familiar dish here
-
Service was excellent This was a very enjoyable meal
-
As at my last meal here the best dishes at 18/20 level
-
The prices here are quite high
-
The Square is a 2 Michelin starred restaurant in Mayfair and
-
T know and what you might not either is that in addition to the a la carte menu The Square regularly hosts special dinners focusing on a particular theme
-
The 9 course tasting menu started with roasted and smoked chestnuts
-
Standout for me was a venison tartare
-
Then Loch Ryan native oyster with a tartare of mackerel
-
Next ravioli of cepes with crushed pumpkin
-
Again this was autumn on a plate
-
The fish course was fillets of dove sole with truffled cauliflower puree
-
What stole the show for me was the truffled cauliflower
-
If I thought I could get away with it I would have licked my plate clean
-
The meat course was breast of grouse with a croustillant of the leg
-
I will be honest I was very full at this point and so couldn&rsquo
-
Pre dessert was a piece of showmanship a quince and sloe sphere
-
Dessert was a signature Square dish Brillat savarin Cheesecake with elderberry and cobnuts
-
Finally Canelle de Bordeaux with Fulham Palace honey and beeswax a small French pastry with a soft and tender custard center and a dark
-
They had been baked in beeswax and the scent as they were brought into the room was delicious
-
My husband and I had a date night here and were treated like VIPs
-
The sommelier was really passionate and we really enjoyed the interaction
-
My highlights were the Dorset crab lasagne
-
To say I was excited is an understatement
-
The past 23 years (it was born the same year as me 1991
-
The Square is located on Bruton Street
-
I noted to the waiter that the wrap was the same as the one I had previously raved about
-
The rabbit nugget (my plebeian name for the dish as I forgot what it is supposed to be called) seemed to be like a minute rabbit explosion in my mouth
-
The prawn cracker was a lovely taste of the sea and a trip down memory lane for me
-
The wrap was a lovely surprise with the caramel and nuts combining in the wrap to create a little crepe like delight
-
Salad of potato with smoked eel
-
I do love it when it is served in Japan
-
A change in their head chef (Rob Weston has now moved on to head up La Trompette which is also owned by Nigel Platts Martin
-
In his place is Gary Foulkes
-
Trust me when I say that it is really tough work
-
March 2013 and The Square was on our list of Michelin star restaurants to visit
-
The banana souffle was the highlight of the evening
-
I will update the blog with a few of our meals out there
-
I popped in to the Square for a cheeky Saturday lunch as I was around the area looking to purchase a suit for my sister&rsquo
-
I was shown to my table and with a nice cold glass of &rsquo
-
I have a significant backlog of meals that are in the blog queue
-
My last visit to the Square was late in January which I had yet to write about
-
I was hit by the bombshell that this was the last week for Gary Foulkes
-
Attending a course at the Royal Society of Medicine and after confirming that the rumours were indeed true
-
Decided to drop by the Square to have one last meal with Gary in charge
-
This has been sold and is now not worth visiting
-
The service was good (not stunning)
-
The plates were unbalanced at best and bland mush at the worst
-
Individual elements were nice but anybody can buy a nice cheese and stick it on a plate
-
The food either looked or smelt great (not both) but the taste was always lacking or offpiste
-
A great place to go with friends and family for a special occasion
-
The best thing about The Square (Mayfair) is it being perfect for all the occasions
-
The courses were playful enough without going overboard
-
We started with lasagne of Dorset crab with cappuccino of shellfish land champagne foam
-
The service was excellent as you would expect from a two Michelin star restaurant
-
Restaurants over 20 years old holding two Michelin stars are a rare sight these days around London so today we thought we&rsquo
-
Phil Howard has been at The Square over half his life after stints with the legendary Marco Pierre White at Harveys and Albert Roux at Le Gavroche
-
Both of which are quality works of a man dedicated to his craft
