La Trompette (Chiswick)

• Confirming that the level of cooking under Mr Weston has improved compared to when the kitchens were run by Anthony Boyd
• Slices of tuna were lightly seared and served with anchovies
• Suckling pig was served with peas
• Although the grapefruit puree was a logical pairing to the richness of the pork
• The puree itself was very astringent (14/20)
• Burnt vanilla cream with poached cherries was nicely balanced
• The cherries going well with the vanilla (15/20)
• At a March meal I started with a quail raviolo with savoury onions topped with bacon foam and a barbeque dressing
• Though the overall effect was quite rich (15/20)
• The scallop (from Orkney) had good natural sweetness and was carefully timed
• Roe deer was served with glazed carrots
• The deer had good flavour but again this was a very rich dish
• Short rib of beef was slow cooked and served with a croustillant of oxtail smoked bone marrow
• Early season Alphonso mango was served with gingerbread
• The lime working well with the yoghurt
• Chocolate pave was served with milk ice cream and candied hazelnuts
• The latter working well with the chocolate (strong 15/20)
• Overall this was a much better meal than the last one I had here under the previous chef
• I had previously downgraded the score for La Trompette and was on the verge of doing so again based on my last meal here
• Under Mr Weston things are clearly back on track
• I think that the new chef is on the way to restoring the culinary standards of La Trompette
• Each course was well thought out
• The one criticism I have of the menu is that there really are very few vegetarian options
• Rather a team of servers with different responsibilities
• They are aware of the problem one waiter diffused some of our chagrin with a self deprecating joke but it does feel like something that could be improved
• Perhaps through some coordination by whoever is in charge of the section
• Overall it was a very pleasant meal
• The cooking was solid with simple but elegant presentation
• Service was friendly and the wine sommelier was very helpful with the wine selection
• We had recently been to Chez Bruce and La Trompette is owned by the same people and has a similarly structured set menu
• We had tasty French food with some British undertones and would go again if we happened to see friends in Chiswick
• The restaurant is one of three more casual French eateries under the ownership of Nigel Platts Martin (who also owned the Square) and Bruce Poole
• Every time I go I always end up going home rolling on the floor because everything is so good I just can't stop eating
• La Trompette in Chiswick looks cheery and inviting with its bubble shaped box hedge and wide awning
• This astute money man has teamed up with chefs he admires and
• The dishes from the aperitif to the small salted Carmel is something that is set to please any taste palette
• Never disappointed is a word I would say again and again
• Booking essential as the place was heaving by 8pm
• Our main courses were either suckling pig (fabulous) or salt marsh lamb (fantastic)
• Great choice of wine (the California cabernet was excellent)
• We thought this was a fair price to pay for a wonderful and very memorable evening
• Not up to usual standard last night Sweetbread starter was excellent but suckling pig was disappointing Very noisy as well
• The 2 course lunch menu is very good value and absolutely delicious
• Comprehensive wine list with quality wine
