  • I went to Mother India Cafe to try my favourite Butter Chicken with pitta bread and massala tea

  • The portion of butter chicken was quite small

  • Overall the food was tasty and the customer service really friendly

  • My vocabulary is now littered with Scots phrases &ndash

  • Yet listen carefully and there is sometimes still a wee hint in my voice betraying that I originally hail from the UK&rsquo

  • I went to school in a part of Birmingham that was blessed with a plethora of Asian run shops and eateries

  • In Edinburgh there is no finer place to demonstrate this than Mother India&rsquo

  • Was thankfully was not dark and dingy as some subterranean eateries can be

  • Are adorned with arty photos portraying life across the Indian sub continent

  • Equally refreshing is the restaurant&rsquo

  • Non meat eaters are very well served

  • As nearly half the dishes available are either vegetarian or vegan

  • Whilst our mains were being cooked

  • Spinach laden sauce with a hint of methi

  • Com/2013/09/review spice is right mother indias cafe

  • We were super rushed as we where going to the nearby Festival Theatre but food came swiftly and it was absolutely delicious

  • Reasonably priced too and staff were very attentive

  • Poppadoms and a piratha are our usual accompaniments so we ordered them too

  • The butter chicken was probably the best I've had in Edinburgh

  • The sauce was creamy with just the right amount of spice

  • My boyfriend's favourite was the Chilli Garlic chicken as it was in his words 'pretty hot'

  • The restaurant has a really relaxed atmosphere and the staff are really helpful and attentive

  • Came here last Valentine's Day and this is the perfect place to go if like me you don't have a huge appetite

  • If you're like my boyfriend and just love to eat everything then you can taste it all with out over committing to one or two large and expensive portions

  • This time there were five of us working together to choose a variety of food (tapas tactics)

  • Balance and sharing are key points of tapas eating

  • The food is great and brought out when it's ready so I recommend getting dishes everyone wants to eat so no one is left hungry and waiting

  • Authentic yet innovative Indian cuisine restaurant that isn't too expensive and cute for a casual dinner with friends or date night with a partner

  • One of the dishes I do recommend is their chana poori

  • This is by far one of the best Indian places ive eaten at in Edinburgh

  • Downstairs lit rooms with the feel of India and the portions are fantastic

  • When we left we both agreed that all the aggro at the beginning was most definitely worth it for the amazing food we had just consumed

  • I would say it is one of my favourites

  • The inside of the restaurant was really lovely and spacious

  • The service was really good and we were served quickly

  • The portions were very small and I didn't feel very full afterwards

  • I would have preferred to order a main dish or more little dishes but they were quite expensive

  • Gobhi aloo and curd and it was the yummiest food

  • We had to wait to get seats but it was all worth it

  • Great wine Sauvignon blanc and it was open for kids too which was the most important thing since we had two of ours with us

  • After my first visit to Mother India I have to agree with the fact that this might be one of the best indians (if not the best) in Edinburgh

  • Went there with a party of 4 and we ordered 6 different dishes

  • By the time we left we were so full of deliciousness

  • Mother India's Cafe (Old Town) is fabulous if you like Indian food this is the best in the city service was excellent the food was amazing what more can I say you must try it I booked again for next month to take friends

  • We were visiting Edinburgh and were longing for some good Indian food

  • It is a little tricky to find the place as it is a little inside from the road where the university is situated

  • It was Wednesday but the place was almost full

  • The place is neatly done and is a Tapas style dining place

  • We ordered three dishes and all of the ordered dishes were nicely cooked

  • May be due to rush hours but overall it was a good experience

  • Yes maybe because a Indian out of India still craves Indian food even if he is a big foodie and even if the foodie loves to try different cuisines

  • An India will always need to be in touch with his mother land

  • Curries are good the breads or naans are big and filing

  • Though the touch with authenticity is bit off but any rajma chole or vegetable curry and any Indian snak or pakoda is always welcome by my tummy

  • Mother India's has such a diverse menu and every dish we tried was so unique and flavorful

  • The daily specials were also quite a nice touch

  • Love the idea of Indian Tapas and was very pleased with the portion sizes

  • After hearing a lot about Mother India cafe by zomato community I went to this restaurant and overall experience was ok not that brilliant

  • Tables are really small but they expect maximum people to cover that and chair as well is not comfortable

  • We ordered some 4 main course and waiter was struggling to keep all in small table

  • So it will be prudent to reserve a spot if you are planning to visit with a group of 4 or more

  • The service was surprisingly fast

  • The portions are sufficient for one person

  • After reading few reviews on Zomato about the best Indian in Old Town Edinburgh

  • I made sure I hunt Mother India's Cafe (Old Town) down and experience Indian dining everyone is applauding about

  • It's not that difficult to find any restaurant in Old Town everything is at a walking distance

  • It's near south bridge and if you are around Cowgate

  • The restaurant is not big but was buzzing with people

  • The main floor was full so after a pause we got seated downstairs

  • The place was neatly jammed with chairs and table too close to each other

  • It felt like you are part of this one big family dinner as you can easily listen into each other's conversation

  • The thing I most like was their tapas menu which I do suggest other restaurants to have as well if the have too many dishes on their menu

  • Butter Chicken was nothing as I expected it was not creamy and flavourful

  • Dal Makhni was little al dente (cooked so as to be still firm when bitten)

  • Assuming it was not cooked for hours for the right consistency and creaminess

  • As mentioned the tables were so small and all our dishes came all at once

  • By the time we got stuck into Keema Samosa they were cold and sad

  • Overall the restaurant was not worth the hike

  • After a poppadom each with mango chutney

  • As almost every other reviewer has said it is served tapas style

  • Mother India's is very reasonably priced and I would have no hesitation in visiting again or recommending to friends

  • The restaurant is huge and looks like it's always full with waiting queue

  • Chilli king prawns with Butter roti and mango chutney

  • The staffs are very busy and gets irritated within a second

  • Trying Indian food is recommended

  • The biggest disappointment was the service especially the lady who manages the seating

  • I am sure there are better options in Edinburgh for Indian food

  • The food was the absolute best Indian food

  • It was so good that we are there twice

  • Amazingly fresh food with fresh vegetables

  • Dal makhani was really authentic
