The Spaniard's Inn (Hampstead)

• Serving seasonal British pub food the Spaniard's Inn sits on a kink in the road opposite Hampstead Heath at the very top of Highgate and was once the haunt of the highwayman Dick Turpin
• Scallops with black pudding and sweetcorn puree or the crispy slow cooked lamb breast with baby leeks and anchovy are tantalising prospects
• The upstairs dining room is always packed for lunch so reserve a table and be vigilant with your order
• Perhaps the best thing about the Spaniards is its historic building
• The low ceilinged pub was built in 1585 as a tollgate for London and the original path of the road is still too narrow for two cars to pass alongside
• Order a large glass of red and sit with your crossword for a content couple of hours
• I appeased myself with the fact that I now had cocktail bars
• I discovered that there is a pub like that which exists in London and it's fabulous
• Probably up there with the best pub grub you can get in London
• We were served almost immediately within 5 10 minutes we got our dishes that we enjoyed with a glass of white wine each
• My standards are very high in that area
• The Spaniard's Inn (Hampstead) is more designed for locals than for tourists but we had a nice mix of both
• One negative the carpark is very tight
• Great British food with a great collection of wine
• The service was super friendly and attentive
• Would come again if there are visitors in town to show off to
