Rumours had been swirling that perennial restauranteur Alan Yau was going to open up a new venture in London
-
The anticipation was reaching fever pitch until finally in April 2015
-
Duck and Rice was unveiled to the public to great fanfare
-
Described as a traditional English pub with an oriental twist
-
It serves delicate and Asian inspired bar food alongside tank beer downstairs while upstairs operates as a more traditional restaurant with a progressive Asian menu
-
Orders of the kung po chicken and No 23 (chicken chow mien) were fine but decidedly ordinary and unworthy of the premium price being paid for them
-
The same can be said for the salt pepper squid and vegetable curry which once again were palatable but nothing mind blowing
-
I must mention the jasmine smoked pork ribs as an exception which were falling off the bone delicious and the defining dish of the meal
-
We followed with a decent salt and pepper squid (£
-
The batter was a bit thick for me but I still really enjoyed the dish which was enhanced with a decent chilli kick
-
Another Rayner recommendation was the crispy shredded beef (£
-
The dish had been garnished with too much orange peel and the orange segments were incongruous
-
S new restaurant with a Chinese Pub concept in Soho
-
The pub concept has nothing to do with the food and just relates to the dé
-
The food is average Chinese and pricey and there are many better alternatives in London for the same type of cuisine
-
The setting is fine and so is service but nothing is great enough to make me want to rush back
-
The Duck and Rice is a baffling
-
The shiny decor is to be expected and the somewhat inept staff are bound to bed in sooner or later
-
Unfocussed menu that panders to narrow palates with dreary slop
-
Only disappointment was the disorganised service they need to really work on that
-
The Duck and Rice greets you as you walk in with four copper tanks holding fresh unpasteurised Pilsner Urquell
-
The wine list is equally extensive
-
The menu is extensive and keeping up with the ethos of the place
-
We ordered the spicy vegetarian dumplings (our waitress was right in cautioning that they really would be extremely spicy)
-
Steamed tender aubergine with mui choi (preserved mustard greens) and the black pepper glass noodles
-
Duck and Rice was one of the restaurant openings I was looking forward to the most this year so a visit was imminent once I heard that the restaurant had officially opened
-
The restaurant stands out on Berwick Street with its exterior glass design and the gleaming gold logo placed in the centre of the frontal faç
-
Yau has a mind for restaurant conceptualisation and it is clear within this space
-
It seems like he has attempted to merge classic Cantonese dishes with the vibe of an upmarket English pub
-
Especially given the four large copper kegs at the front of the restaurant is a plausible claim
-
Shaking hands with the owner Kevin who we are of course on first name terms with
-
Ll all swear that we have the best Golden Dragon or Pekking Palace
-
That serves the best Number 23 in the country
-
The duck is very good but the dim sum is mediocre and overpriced
-
Getting in for dinner is highly as we found out on our first attempt trying to have a meal there
-
We had better luck getting in over lunch without a reservation however at about 15h00 the restaurant was preparing for the evening and night shift and service was absolutely terrible
-
The shrimps appetizer was good and their fried rice
-
I think that is because I am half Thai half Chinese
-
I think dim sum with craft beer was a perfect combination
-
I actually thought it was a great idea
-
Not my favourite because it was too bland and too much coconut milk for my taste
-
This from the man whose favourite card is one bearing the legend &ldquo
-
The ground floor is a pub and the restaurant is upstairs nice decor walls
-
The tables are lined up in an awkward way
-
I wanted to leave even tho I was very hungry
-
When the waiter came back for feedback my friend said food is ok (typical british) i said food is pretty average awful' sorry couldn't eat it' to what the waiter replied
-
Dear waiter You are meant to say i apologise would you like anything else instead
-
Around 1am when i got home was feeling a bit funny it was 3am and couldnt sleep because i had stomach ache headache
-
In the early noughties when Berwick street was a slightly underdeveloped anomaly in Soho
-
Every night that started at the Endurance was guaranteed to be a winner (mainly because they tend to end at the infamously so terrible that it was fabulous Trash Palace
-
The Endurance was no more and has had a massive
-
Prawn dimsums are excellent along with chicken curry and rice
-
Duck and Rice is Alan Yau's attempt to reinvent the pub adding while adding his signature Chinese flair
-
Upstairs space is dedicated to the dining room
-
I usually end up at Yauatcha for dim sum as Duck and Rice is one of my go to spots to get delivery
-
Baked Char Siu Bun (7/10) The bun itself is very light
-
It holds up well to the stickiness of the filling and honey that tops that is drizzled atop the bun
-
Venison Puff (7/10) Having to compete with the venison puff at Yauatcha is a hefty task
-
I find that the filling in Yauatcha's retains a bit more of the sauce that the venison is braised in allowing for a slightly moister end product
-
This however is delicious minus this minor complaint
-
The mooli puff is a contender for one of my favorites from Duck and Rice though
-
The pastry is rich with fat
-
The pastry itself is deceptively thin as in the mouth it feels incredibly substantial
-
The prawns inside were devoid of seasoning
-
These needed some drips of soy with every bite
-
I assume it was intentional
-
The Chinese sausage tasted aggressively of rice wine and was the best bite that wasn't rice
-
The rice inside makes up the bulk and is the star of the show absorbing all of the flavor from the fillings within
-
Sesame Prawn Toast (8/10) The toast to prawn ratio in this is ridiculous
-
This combined with the heavily toasted sesame seeds provides an audible crunch with each bite
-
The toast on the sesame seeds is especially notable as it's aroma is especially robust and flavor fully developed
-
Egg Tart (8/10) The sheen of the yolk is a beautiful yellow
-
The custard is wonderfully set
-
The steamed veg was just like how my maid cooks in back in China
-
On Thursday night it was jam packed
-
One of the best traditional Chinese food that I have had
-
I do tend to subject restaurant names to scrutiny when they are particularly interesting
-
Reservation is necessary even on weekdays
-
Ambience is fantastic and service is amazing even at corner tables
-
Edamame ✅ possibly the best salted edamame
-
The flavour is infused in so perfectly
-
Soaked in a perfect sauce and stuffed with amazingly delicious vegetables
-
T have much flavour but still tasted amazing as they were cooked to perfection
-
Black pepper mock meat the flavours infused were extremely good
-
Stir fried beans ✅ the best addition to the main course
-
Went for dinner on a Friday night with a few local friends
-
The dim sums were served in a bowl
-
The fried rice and kung pao are a classic combination and you can't go wrong
-
The Crispy aromatic duck was served on a plate and our server shred It into pieces to be able to eat it in a wrap
-
It was served with chilli dip
-
It tasted delicious as a whole but was too dry by itself
-
Duck and Rice is a great place for a casual dinner
-
I went for an early dinner on a Saturday night when it was still quiet so I can't comment on the ambience during peak hours
-
Though the service on this occasion was a bit slow
-
The portions are good for the price
-
Hospitality 5/5 very welcoming staff and great with recommendations
-
These are by far the best vegetable dumplings I have ever had in my life
-
Chicken kungpao with egg fried rice
