Gordon's Wine Bar (Strand)

• There are still private clubs in John Adam Street (Duke Street in the 1600s) with hatches that open from the back of the cellar and were once used by criminals fleeing police along the river
• Beneath the arches the simple wooden tables are lit by candlelight only
• Once home to Samuel Pepys and Rudyard Kipling it claims to be the oldest wine bar in Britain and has one of London's best wine menus
• Sherry and madeiras and its food is designed to compliment the primary function of drinking wine so cheeses and homemade pies feature heavily
• Gordon's Wine Bar is a bustling gem of an eatery just next to Charing Cross station
• Cold meats and more substantial fare are arranged as a buffet
• Rather more extensive and though some bottles are really very dear
• There is plenty of choice for those of more modest means and the staff are exceedingly helpful to the non connoisseur
• Then there really is nowhere better in London
• Their wine list is certainly impressive
• I ordered a cheese plate which was served with two kinds of dip

• Order yourself a hunk of cheese and bread and wash it all down with the excellent wine and you have the makings of a wonderful evening out
• Rabbit warren rooms with cosy nooks and wine
• Descending the stairs and tentatively entering the dark cavern to find a table was quite an experience
• The cheese platters are perfect for sharing with a bottle of wine

• Candle lit cellar is a complete escape from the outside
• Thought the wines were also quite costly but the cheeses and roast beef were very good
• We got there at half past five pm and it was already full but the space was so cute that we gladly waited for a table
• One thing I found really nice was that at some point Gordon's Wine Bar (Strand) is so full that people share tables and sit in every corner they can or they'll just stand while drinking and eating with their friends
• Its a hectic place with a good wine selection
• No places to sit as it is very popular and for good reason
• 32 a bottle in London is next to nothing
• A visit to Gordon's is a must do in London
• If you want to enjoy a nice French wine or port outside with friends this is the place to be
• It takes a bit to do your order (patience required) and the space inside is tiny but £

• Outdoors the place is crowded but pleasant enough to enjoy it

• We had the Dona Paula (Red) with the Manchengo cheese and a plate of cured pork

• Favourite time to go is a Sunday afternoon when you can sometimes get a space inside the cave inside wine and cheeseboards in a venue which feels like a hidden gem in the South of France
• The Sunday roast offering was tempting but I couldn't resist a 3 cheese platter
• Down a sneaky little alleyway and through a midget sized door is this amazing wine bar
• This goes for all ends of the wine spectrum whether you're a big spender or are looking for the cheapest bottle
• Gordon's Wine Bar is an absolutely spectacular place and a place you simply must visit when in London
• The Cave Like bar with candlelit tables is super romantic and has a beautiful atmosphere like no where else
• If the decor is not enough of an aphrodisiac for you
• We agree that we had the best wine we have ever had here at Gordon's Wine Bar and so reasonably priced
• Formaggi with your luscious wine if you wish which is match made in heaven
• Shared a bottle of wine and it was perfect and very few souls in sight
• Gordon's House Red is our favourite
• The little plates are a delight (prawns are a must have) while the wine menu is dangerously tempting
• Fab cheese selection along with huge sizes
• The atmosphere was proper to stay outside holding the cold and enjoy the wine

• The atmosphere inside of the bar is amazing and it really reminds me to the classic Italian wine bar and 'osteria'
• Service is really nice and the vibe is really cool
• Inside the bar seams you are in a XVI century tavern
• Outside you have a nice terrace with some barrels ideal for smoking and drinking
• Great food and a brilliant staff looking after each table with so much of grace and enthusiasm
• It's one of the best wine bar in strand they are having wide range of wine collection
• Though the place is always packed it still a good place for chatting cos it not noisy
